Overcome Shyness: Getting Out Of Your Shell
There are a variety of reasons why some people tend to shy away from other people. Especially in social gatherings where there is a huge crowd, one can easily identify a clam amidst the butterflies.
Clams sit in one corner. As much as possible, they choose a table that is farther away from the presidential table or one which will enable them to leave without being spotted. They are afraid to talk. Social butterflies are their exact opposite. They mingle and talk to other people, even those they just met at the party. They make others feel at home.
Perhaps, one reason why people clam up may be because of unfamiliarity with the surroundings. Not being on familiar and comfortable grounds can lead a person to close her wings or clam up. Another reason may stem from feelings of insecurity. Such feelings spring up because of low self-esteem. It is almost congruent to say, then, that if a person does not have belief in her own self nor in her capacity as an individual, she is most likely to withdraw or shy away.
For such people, it may be very difficult or an almost impossible task to overcome shyness. Sometimes, they tend to simply let things be, and to accept it as just another fact of life. But they could be missing out a lot in their life, so they may want to take that one leap forward to overcome their shyness. I t is not going to be easy, but neither is it going to be impossible.
Overcoming shyness begins with the individual’s verbal declaration to overcome the problem. This goes without saying that the individual recognizes the problem and she is willing to change. This makes it easier for her to follow the tips and suggestions that could make her crawl out of her shell. Next, the individual needs to be around people to get that “comfortable feel”. At first she may want to go out only with people she is already comfortable with. Pretty soon, she may be ready to start meeting other people. She may even begin to long for the company of strangers whom she can have a decent conversation with.
Confidence is a very important thing to develop in order to overcome shyness. For a person with very low self-esteem, developing confidence can be a fairly demanding task. It necessitates looking at one’s self in a different perspective. It also means believing in one’s self. It also helps to make one’s self look good in order for them to feel good. One will be surprised at how much a good appearance can do to one’s self esteem! Getting a different haircut or a new set of wardrobe can boost one’s resolve to overcome shyness.
Also, it may be advisable for the individual to always think of the brighter side of things. Thinking positively negates any bad feeling one has towards her own self, thus making her feel more confident when interacting with other people.
